Description

These awesome "vegan" cow skulls are hand-carved entirely from wood, etched with a cool tribal design and feature rope detailing wrapped around the horns which adds texture and visual interest.  Medium and Large sizes are available in 2 colours -- Natural, an unpainted light wooden tone, or White/Natural, that is the face is painted white while the horns and tribal pattern are left natural.  The wood is only roughly finished so it retains its beautiful woodgrain texture and variances making each piece truly unique.  Whether you are going for a relaxed, rustic, country-pastoral vibe or seeking to add a masculine, spiritual touch to a space, scoop one up while you can because these cow skulls always sell out!

The tradition of cow, or bull, skulls in this style being used as decoration can be traced back to early peoples such as the Balinese and Native American indigenous tribes who believed that no part of the animals they hunted for survival should go to waste.  It is because the animals provided so much to the people that they were highly respected and shown gratitude.  Thus, cow skulls were carved and etched with intricate designs, shown on display at sacred ceremonies, and hung on walls in reverence and as tribute -- bringing new life to the symbol of the skull which we often only associate with the dark side of death.  In this manner, the cow skull came to represent new beginnings, appreciation of the natural world, protection from harm, and continues to serve as a humble reminder of our mortality.  Cow skulls are commonly seen throughout the American Southwest.  In addition, the cow itself often symbolizes strength, courage, sustenance and abundance as cows are powerful sustainers of energy, subsisting mostly on grass and water yet providing such richness as milk and cheese.  Particularly in the Hindu faith, cows also represent being grounded, gentle and humble in life.
